"I Do!"

By
October 29th, 2014

"I DO!"  Two such simple words...but they hold everlasting meaning.  Especially when spoken in front of an audience of your family and friends proclaiming your never ending love for your betrothed.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of officiating the wedding of my niece that flew in from Florida.  She has Hawaii ties in that her mom and dad are both from Hilo.  Though she's an Air Force "brat" and lived in Germany and Texas and eventually ended up in Florida, she still loves the islands and visits every chance she gets!  Not to mention, her husband is an avid surfer!

So when she was planning her "Wedding in Hawaii", the idea of my becoming ordained got tossed around.  I looked into it and decided "why not?!"  The process in itself isn't difficult...you don't take any classes, you basically just sign up, pay the fee and they send your certification!  Tah dah!  Then all you need to do is register with the State of Hawaii so that you are able to legally perform a wedding.  Did you know that various celebs are ordained?  Tony Danza, Sharon Stone, Goldie Hawn...and many more!

As the date got closer, I found myself getting nervous.  I was thinking to myself..."SELF...what are you doing???  This is a very important event in Cheryl and Kelly's life!  What if you screw up the vows or something!"  Aiyah!  WTH!  Yes, those thoughts did run through my head.

Needless to say, the bride and groom were stunning...and the wedding went off without a hitch!  (Play on words there...lol!)

Feeling Thankful

By
October 7th, 2014

Today I am in a very pensive mood...there's so much craziness in this world today.  Things have changed so much from when I was growing up in Hilo.  Used to be that you could go shopping and not worry about locking your door at home, much less your car (in fact, you could leave your car keys in your car and not worry).  Nowadays, if you were to leave your car keys in your car...a sure bet would be that your car would be MIA in no time flat!  AND you would be considered the baboose for leaving your keys in the car!  This morning I forgot my glasses in the house and had to make sure I locked my car in the short time that it took for me to run back in the house to retrieve my glasses in case someone of a "not so nice nature" had seen that I left my bag in my car ~ don't laugh, it's happened!    My daughter's school backpack was stolen from her car while eating at a restaurant...she had a camera in it and therefore lost whatever photos were in the camera at the time.  People that prey on others...bachi on you!  Used to be that neighbors looked out for neighbors...neighbors were almost like extended family!  Do YOU know your neighbors?  I live in a townhouse complex...there are people moving in and out all the time, you almost never have a chance to get to know anyone!

People beheading other people...WTH!  Really, how can you do that to another human being and expect to be allowed into heaven?  People killing one another.  Terrorists lurking about.  Cyber attacks.  Bullying.  ISIS.  Can't we all just get along?

What kind of world are we going to leave to our children and grandchildren?  It truly scares me...doesn't it scare YOU!!!!

I'm thankful that I lived in a more carefree time when I was growing up...there wasn't so much violence in the world in which we live.

Live aloha...spread aloha everyone.  Life is too darned short!

That "Special" Song

By
July 11th, 2014

So do you and your Special Someone have a Special Song?

I know I have songs that remind me of special times in my life.  There's 10 years difference between my sister and I...she practically raised me, so many of my musical memories are of songs that she listened to in the 60's, my dad's favorites were country western songs (Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash), I don't remember my mom having any preference...and my brothers were pretty much grown and out of the house when I was adopted.

I've always loved music.  I love dancing, I love to sing karaoke (don't know that I'm real good at it ~ I enjoy it!), I played the ukulele when I was little.  Music makes me happy...it moves me.  Sounds corny huh?  I listen to the words of a song and it touches me.

Recently, Megan and Thomas moved to Tacoma.  Before they left, she said that Thomas asked her to listen to a song by Tanya Tucker...Two Sparrows in a Hurricane...I recently listened to it.  And it TOTALLY fits the path that they have chosen right now...the move to Tacoma, the fact that they have a little baby and another on the way ~ unfreakin' real!  It's such a beautiful song!

Makes me miss them so much more every time I hear it.  I share it with you...enjoy!  I love you my two sparrows...

Patriotic Moments

By
July 2nd, 2014

The 4th of July weekend is upon us.  A day to celebrate our INDEPENDENCE...show off our Stars and Stripes.  Time for parades, picnics and fireworks!

Are you going to bake...order out...or BBQ on the 4th?

Red, White and Blue Strawberry Shortcake Recipe4th of July BBQ & GrillingAmerican Apple Pie - Brown and white sugars, raisins and lemon juice add a wonderful taste and texture to this quintessential apple pie. Be sure to cube or slice the apples uniformly, and, if you like, dot the apples with pats of butter.

Boston Baked Beans - This recipe for Boston baked beans uses navy beans, molasses, brown sugar, and ketchup to create a wonderful old-fashioned baked bean flavor.Chris' Bay Area Burger - These burgers are the hit of my town. All my friends come over every weekend just for these burgers.

Hmmm...what to make, what to make?   I can't decide!    Well, I still have a couple of days to think about it.

Kindred Spirit Mailbox

By
June 24th, 2014

While watching the news last night, I viewed a special feature on a Kindred Spirit Mailbox in Bird Island, North Carolina that made me stop and just go ... "Awww"!  (heart, heart)

A kindred spirit is a person whose interests or attitudes are similar to one's own.   Some people refer to it as a relationship based on a spiritual and emotional connection.

It all started over 35 years ago when Frank Nesmith and his girlfriend put up the original mailbox and left a blank notebook in it in hopes that people would leave little messages in it.   Something so seemingly simple, yet many people actually stopped and took the time to share their deepest thoughts and feelings in these notebooks.   Apparently, people are still leaving messages to this day!    I'm sure it's not the same mailbox...and there's a cute bench there now...but what a cute idea huh?

They have a collection of notebooks from years past, and the gentleman, Mr. Nesmith (who is now 87) has helpers that keep the notebooks replenished since he does not visit as regularly as he used to.  I was wondering what happened to all of the full journals and read that they are kept at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

I would love to visit this mailbox and pen my thoughts as well as take time to read some of the journals of the past!

What a heart warmer! <3
